Dutch Transition corner cabinet

Dutch Transition corner cabinet

A stately Dutch mahogany corner cabinet with four doors divided across two levels. The doors have a pronounced vertical curvature and are decorated with dependent festoons suspended from ribbons. The cabinet stands upon two protruding carved feet in the shape of elegant volutes which stretch into draped acanthus leaves that cover the entirety of the arched knees. Above the carvings, the stiles are horizontally curved.

The flanks and centre of the ascending, arched crown are embellished with finely and richly sculpted consoles. The crown also features at the centre a portrait medallion that appears to rest on an elegant bow.
The interior of the upper cabinet has three shelves and three drawers.

This exceptionally handsome and richly ornamented corner cabinet with its splendid original patina and allure once likely graced a dining room or salon, where it would have served a dual function. Firstly, cabinets of this type were used to store silverware, glassware and any china possessions. Secondly, when opened, they also served as a buffet, allowing hosts to serve their guests while simultaneously displaying their valuable possessions.
