A pair of ormolu coupes from the French Empire period. The coupes stand on a pedestal on a plain plinth. On top of the plinth a sloping convex moulding decorated with stylized palmettes. The, otherwise plain, pedestal is decorated with mascarons adorned with laurel wreaths on four sides. The base of the coupes is decorated with stylized acanthus leaves. The bowl is decorated with gadroons all around the body. The bottom is decorated with stylized acanthus leaves and the flared edge is decorated with a rim of stylized palmettes over a ribbon of vines and grapes.
These wide coupes are probably used as decorative objects to adorn a mantelpiece or sideboard. They could, just as well, have served as potpourris.
