Pair of French Louis XV Candlesticks
Period
ca. 1730Material
gilt bronsSizes
(height) 31.00cm. (diameter) 17.00cm.Description
These candlesticks have a round base with three edged up decorations of elegant leaf-motive volutes. The stems are also decorated with leaf-shaped volutes.
Typical for the period, as for the previous style-periods, the transition from the base to the stem is emphasized in the design. The baluster-shaped stem shows the same stylistic features at the base, but evolves in more fluent winding shapes towards the top, characteristic for the “style rocaille”.
The entire objects show a similar contrast of formal classic forms combined with the more freely shaped volutes that imply asymmetry. This combination of styles places the objects in the early Louis XV period.
