Description

An exceptionally large jar of which the baluster shaped body is decorated with three rows of cartouches shaped in the form of lotuspetals inbetween geometrical borders on the foot and shoulder. On the shoulder, the spaces between the lotuspetals are filled with flowering sprigs. The lower row of cartouches are smaller and they all are alternately decorated with landscapes, houses and flowering sprigs of prunus and peony.
The neck is decorated with a ribbon of flowers and leaves between geometrical bands. The bellshaped lid is topped with a lotusbud. Underneath six leafshaped cartouches spread out over the lid. Each one of them is decorated with flowering sprigs, landscapes or figures. The space inbetween is filled with sprigs.
The recent giltwood stand consists of a truncated square base, decorated with rosettes. The top is a round base with a raised edge.
Kangxi period
After the internal turmoil during the 1644-1680 period, when the production of porcelain ground to a halt, emperor Kangxi succeeded to restore the Chinese economy. The manufacturing of porcelain was also re-established. Kangxi porcelain is characterised by the finely grained white material, a slightly blue or green glaze and an apt style of painting, in which the different hues of blue suggest volume and depth in the representation.
