Description

The design of this ewer is derived from Renaissance models of the late 15th century. The ewer is richly decorated with animal heads and depictions of animals and flower designs.

In the 19th century Movement known as Historicism there was a great eagerness to express “individuality” by means of artifacts that referred to the successful periods of a particular country. That eagerness was fueled by the national, international and world expos that particularly focused on national “arts and crafts objects” to be brought to the attention of the global public. For Italy this prosperous period was undoubtedly the Renaissance.
This ewer is a fine example of reverting to the design of the Renaissance, whereas the decorations also show contemporary elements.
