Description

A small French commode with a bulged front. The front edges have a beaded edge in ormolu bronze that runs all the way down to the sabots.
The marquetery on the front stretches over both drawers in rectangular fields with flowering sprigs. The edges are in bois teinté.
On the sides rectengular fields surrounded by frames in rosewood and boxwood. The marquetery shows geometric patterns. The ormolu bronze fittings show Rococo shapes.
Jean Baptiste Hédouin (?- januari 1783), was registered as master cabinetmaker on may 22. 1738 with the Parisien guild. In his workshop at the Rue Traversière-st.-Antoine he manufactured high quality furniture. He worked in Louis XV style (Rococo) and decorated his furniture preferably with marquetery representing flowering sprigs and leafs or geometrical shapes. This commode however is a non-typical work of his hand. JME is the trademark of the “jurande des menuisiers-ébénistes”: the sworn in members of the cabinetmakers guild that watch over the eventual quality.
